The endowment fund for the Monte Mojino region was established in 2010 by the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (Semarnat, acronym in Spanish) through the National Commission of Natural Protected Areas (Conanp, acronym in Spanish), the Fondo de Infraestructura Hidráulica de Sinaloa, and Mexican Fund for the Conservation of Nature (FMCN).
In 2012, Conselva, Costas y Comunidades began implementing the project, seeking to maintain environmental services through training, conservation, and management actions agreed upon with the population of La Guásima, municipality of Concordia in Sinaloa. In 2023, under the same line, Conselva, Costas y Comunidades began to work with the population of Tepuxta to ensure the conservation of green infrastructure to reduce the water vulnerability of the city of Mazatlán and Distrito de Riego 111.
The lines of work that guide the actions of the Monte Mojino Fund are:
The endowment fund for the region known as Monte Mojino was established in 2010.
To date, the project has contributed to the restoration and conservation of ecosystem services on more than 2,000 hectares and promoted sustainable management on over 7,000 hectares of agrarian land. This approach has been supported by ongoing training processes for community members. A survey conducted in 2021 revealed that 100% of those interviewed considered forest care important and had perceived an increase in vegetation cover within the community’s territory.
For ten consecutive years, the Monte Mojino Fund channeled public funds in collaboration with the National Forestry Commission (Conafor, acronym in Spanish) through matching funds, successfully reducing environmental offenses. Following the conclusion of the agreement in 2022, and together with the community, Conselva, Costas y Comunidades A.C. promoted the creation of a community fund to ensure the continuity of participatory environmental monitoring and to support sustainable productive projects. At the same time, the organization continues to provide training and technical assistance in conservation and sustainable ecosystem management.
In 2023, a second PSA agreement with Conafor was launched through matching funds, once again led by Conselva, Costas y Comunidades A.C. in the community of Tepuxta. This new agreement focuses on green infrastructure conservation, unlike the previous agreement in La Guásima, which targeted areas of high biological value. As part of this new effort, a young leader from Tepuxta was selected and trained as a community technician. He received training in operational planning, technical and administrative management of PSA, community governance, and monitoring on a demonstration plot. His role will be key in linking the community with Conselva for project implementation.
In 2024, two Nature-based Solutions (NbS) were implemented on a pilot site: livestock exclusion and adjustment of grazing pressure, and agro-silvopastoral systems. The site is under constant monitoring to evaluate the hydrological response to the implemented NbS. Additionally, a demonstration plot for best livestock management practices was established, launching a training, monitoring, and evaluation program for the promoted management measures. This process is being documented with community support to generate visual materials that facilitate communication of progress and promote environmental awareness among livestock producers and decision-makers.
Thanks to the Monte Mojino Fund and Conselva’s work, community engagement in conserving green infrastructure remains active, with particular emphasis on the participatory environmental monitoring program. This program has enabled 128 kilometers of patrol routes, the formation of a forest fire prevention and control brigade, and the initiation of dialogue with the livestock sector to promote a transition toward regenerative ranching. In addition, 280 landowners continue to benefit from financial incentives for conserving green infrastructure through the Local PES Mechanism with matching funds (MLPSA-FC) operating in the community.
