Conserva Aves Mexico is a national initiative framed within the Conserva Aves project, which operates throughout Latin America and aims to support the conservation of birds and their habitats with a focus on community action. The initiative promotes social inclusion to protect key spaces for birds in Mexico, while also strengthening climate resilience and fostering local sustainable development.
The organizations selected to implement projects in their territories represent a concrete step following the commitment signed in October 2024 during the United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP16) in Cali, Colombia. On that occasion, Birds Canada, the National Audubon Society, and Mexican Fund for the Conservation of Nature (FMCN, acronym in Spanish) signed an agreement to collaborate in protecting threatened, endemic, and migratory bird species along their routes across the Americas.
Through this collaboration, new Areas Voluntarily Designated for Conservation (ADVC, acronym in Spanish) will be established in priority sites for bird conservation, contributing to the global 30×30 goal, one of the key objectives of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which seeks to protect 30% of the planet’s lands and seas by 2030.
A key component of the initiative is the Equity Fund, which ensures that at least 20% of subprojects are led by women, youth, and/or Indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples.
The call for proposals, launched during the first quarter of 2025, was aimed at legally established local organizations interested in certifying or expanding ADVCs in strategic areas for bird conservation.
A total of 31 proposals that met all the established requirements were received, 24 under the public call modality and 7 evaluated under the Equity Fund modality. After an evaluation process led by external specialists, 12 proposals were selected: 8 from the public call and 4 from the Equity Fund. The subprojects will be implemented across eight states in Mexico over an 18-month period starting in June 2025, in coordination with Pronatura Sur, A.C., the implementing partner of the Conserva Aves Mexico initiative.
